Wave goodbye to Summer and say hello to Fall! As the holiday season approaches, it's the perfect time to brush up on those independent living skills. Children with Autism? They are incredibly resilient with consistent practice, affection, compassion, and plenty of patience. With the weather dial shifting, it's prime time for everyone to master the art of dressing for the changing seasons!
Through the independent selection of their attire, children acquire valuable lessons in taking ownership of their choices and adapting to their comfort preferences. This practice serves as an excellent means for them to showcase their unique personalities and fosters regular exercise in decision-making skills.
The ability to discern and make independent decisions based on your own wants and desires is something that our clients deserve. A disability should not take away an individuals choice. Understandably learners may face some struggles at first, for example identifying if its rainy weather is appropriate for shorts or whether or not the clothes they are wearing fits their sensory needs that day.
4 Quick Steps for How to Prepare for Seasonal Weather Changes Autism Style
Begin by asking your child what the weather is like outside. Take them to a window point out the key features of the weather. If your child is nonverbal provide picture examples so that they can c communicate.
Reinforce (provide praise like “Good job!”) for correct responses. Lightly correct the error by showing the correct response, avoid saying “No.”
When preparing to get your child dressed ask them “What goes with the weather today?” To help them identify the relationship between the weather and clothing. Make it fun, make a song out of it! Learning should always be enjoyable.
Give our child the opportunity to pick out the correct clothing and guide them in the correct response. Remember, practice makes perfect!
As far as combatting the sensory complications that come with choosing clothes, we can help with that too! Instead of organizing the clothes based on apparel only, add in the step of organizing them by texture as well. By doing so it reduces time spent sifting through clothes to find the kiddos preferred texture of fabric for that day. There's the added bonus that it also promotes organization and structure for them.
At BeeKind, we prioritize seeing our children as individuals first, regardless of any disabilities they may have. It is crucial to honor their preferences and needs to the fullest extent possible. Our clients have various ways to express their creativity, such as selecting outfits that make them feel comfortable and confident each day. Encouraging them to independently dress themselves can build their decision-making skills and boost their self-assurance.
This month we are focusing on the seasonal change and support learners through decision making and independence. To do this we are focusing on weather changes and deciding which clothing items are appropriate for the weather.
